The consumer market is very unpredictable. Newer and improved products launched almost every other day also make it very competitive. The marketing department of a company works to understand what the consumers want, and present their products in a way so as to beat the competition. Analyzing, strategizing, coming up with new ideas, outdoing the competition, all are part of a day in the life of a marketing manager.

Research involves the first process of understanding the consumer, what their needs are, what their purchasing habits are, and how they view themselves in relation to the rest of the world.
  • Brand Management
    It is the key function in the consumer products industry. Brand managers are often likened to small business owners because they assume responsibility for a brand or brand family. They are always focused on the big picture. It is their job to distill the brand's essence, map out their competitors in their brand's category, identify marketing opportunities, and be able to effectively communicate the unique benefits of that product or service.
  • Advertising
    Advertisers work with all aspects of marketing from strategy to concept to the execution of the strategy. Most of their jobs are on the business side of advertising include account management, account planners, and media buyers.
  • Promotions
    This team works on creating programs that unite advertising to purchase incentives such as special discounts, coupons, samples, gifts with purchase, rebates, and sweepstakes. In order to promote these programs the promotion team will often use direct mail, telemarketing, in-store displays, advertisements, product endorsements, or special kick-off events. Creativity and judgment are highly valued.
  • Public Relations
    These are the people who ensure that the public image of the company remains spic and span and the ones who build contacts and maintain them for the company. This job is very important since no business can survive on its own and would be treated with disdain if its public image suffers.

The Study Route

A popular way of pursuing a career in marketing is to do one’s graduation in a relevant field such as B. Com and then to take up marketing specialization while pursuing MBA. For admission in graduation courses, appropriate board exams marks cut-off must be cleared. For higher studies, one must sit for competitive entrance examinations such as the Common Aptitude Test (CAT).
