Hospitality – Reaching for the stars, with a Smile

The aviation industry is always on the lookout for airhostesses/stewards who can make their passengers’ journey easier and more comfortable. One of the few careers which does not demand any 3 year long course, it is ideal for aspirants looking to earn a good salary right after school. Travel, glamour, and living the fast life are other perks of the job.

Early Beginnings
The job requires strong conviction, commitment and hard work. Apart from this, the course involves learning about the technical aspects of aircraft operation as well as developing skills to tackle difficult situations.
To be a good cabin crew member, one should be:

  • Well groomed, as they are the image-builder of the company.
  • Calm and sober enough to be able to effectively deal with people from all sorts of backgrounds, from those who see cabin crew as some sort of servants, to those who'll be gazing at them in awe.
  • Capable of taking up the responsibility of looking after the needs, comforts and safety of people
  • Physically active and in good health. Flying can be quite stressful physically and hence the airline checks aspirants for physical fitness.

  • Airhostess/Steward:
    An airhostess/steward is responsible for making your journey in the skies pleasant and more comfortable. He/she has to ensure that passengers are served with a smile, elegantly guided to their seats, help them get settled, coordinate security personnel, give directions to the caterers and doing myriad of other things. Most airlines employ both girls and guys with a pleasing personality for this role

The Study Route

To be an airhostess/steward, one has to be a12th standard pass, but a Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

The age requirements are between 19-27 years with a minimum height of 5’3 for girls and 5’7 for boys and not more than 6’.

A diploma in Hotel Management, Nursing, and knowledge of a foreign language are desirable qualifications, which may give a candidate an edge over other aspirants.

3 Must-Do Activities for your child
  • Show your child some of the popular movies prominently featuring flight attendants – Gwyneth Paltrow’s View from the Top, tops the charts
  • If you are traveling in a flight, request the airhostess/steward to show your child around and answer questions about the job
  • Ask your child to help you host guests over lunch or dinner. Communicating with people in such a setting is the best training for the hospitality industry.

  • The Road Ahead

    The perks of working as an airhostess/steward are many. Great salaries, the opportunity to travel around the world, and the aura of glamour, all make it an attractive profile for youngsters. While the shelf-life may be one limitation, the career spans about eight to ten years, after which one could move on to the ground duties including the job of a Ground Hostess, Check Hostess, etc. or diversify into any one of the other departments in the airline industry.

    With privatization and foreign collaboration increasing every day, the future is bright for an air hostess/steward. Most airlines are looking to increase their fleet, and with more and more people opting to fly, the demand for airlines staff is bound to be on a steady rise for the next few years.
